Size limits

GIF size limits on popular platforms

Check how small your destination needs the file, then pick that target.

How it works

What makes a GIF smaller?

Use them alone or together. Target-size mode combines them automatically, gentlest first.

FAQ

GIF compressor FAQ

Is this GIF compressor free? Is there a watermark?

Yes—free and unlimited, with no sign-up and no watermark.

How do I compress a GIF to a specific size, like 500 KB or 100 KB?

Upload the GIF, pick a preset under Target size or choose Custom and type any number of KB, then press Compress GIF. It optimizes losslessly first, then reduces colors, raises lossy compression, shrinks the size and, if needed, drops frames until it fits—keeping the best-looking result.

Can I compress a GIF without losing quality?

Try lossless optimization first: in Manual, set compression to Lossless, colors to Original and size to 100%. The picture is unchanged and files usually shrink 0–30%; already-optimized GIFs may barely change. Going smaller means accepting some quality loss.

Is my GIF uploaded?

No. The gifsicle engine is compiled to WebAssembly and runs in your browser, so the GIF never leaves your device.

Will compression reduce quality?

Lossless optimization doesn’t. Getting much smaller needs fewer colors, lossy compression or a smaller size, which costs some quality—so the original and result play side by side before you download.

Does dropping frames speed the GIF up?

No. The dropped frames’ time is added to the frames that stay, so the length is unchanged—motion is just a little less smooth. GIFs with few or slow frames can’t drop frames.

Why can’t it reach my target?

Very small targets may be out of reach even after resizing, fewer colors and dropped frames; you get the smallest result. Try Manual with 25% size or 1/3 of the frames, or shorten the GIF first.

What size limit do WeChat stickers have?

For the WeChat Sticker Store, main stickers are 240×240 pixels and each GIF must be under 500 KB. Check the platform’s current guidelines before submitting.

How small must a Discord emoji GIF be?

Discord custom emoji must be under 256 KB—pick the Discord 256 KB preset.

How big a GIF can I compress? Does it work on phones?

Up to 50 MB per GIF. It works in current desktop and mobile browsers; very large GIFs are slower on phones.

Still too big—any other options?

If you’re posting to Instagram, TikTok or similar, convert the GIF to MP4—usually a fraction of the size.
