Common sizes
GIF sizes for popular platforms
Check what your destination expects, then pick that size.
| Use | Dimensions | File size |
|---|---|---|
| WeChat Sticker Store (main stickers) | 240×240 | Under 500 KB |
| Discord custom emoji | 128×128 | Under 256 KB |
| Slack custom emoji | 128×128 | Under 128 KB |
| Twitch animated emotes | 112×112 | Under 1 MB |
Limits change—check each platform’s current rules. Right size but too heavy? Use the GIF compressor to hit a file size.
Quality
Does resizing make a GIF blurry?
Shrinking barely affects it; enlarging does. With this engine, four 512 px GIFs shrunk to 240 px scored 0.98–0.99 SSIM against an ideal resize.
Shrinking: sharp
Smooth resampling blends pixels, so edges and text stay clean—ideal for stickers and avatars.
Enlarging: softer
There’s no extra detail to recover, so enlarging just stretches pixels. Remake the GIF from a larger source if you can.
Smaller size, not always a small file
Our 2.7 MB sample shrinks to about 800 KB at 240×240. To hit a file size, use the GIF compressor.
FAQ
GIF resizer FAQ
Is this GIF resizer free? Is there a watermark?
Yes—free and unlimited, with no sign-up and no watermark.
How do I resize a GIF to 240×240?
If the GIF is square, pick 240 px. If not, switch to Crop, choose 1:1 and frame the subject, then pick 240 px for an exact 240×240.
Will resizing change the speed or drop frames?
No. Only each frame’s dimensions change; the frame count, timing and looping stay the same.
Can I make a GIF bigger?
Yes, up to 2000 px a side—but enlarged GIFs look blurrier and get heavier, and the tool will warn you.
What happens if I unlock the aspect ratio?
Width and height become independent, so the picture stretches or squashes. To change the shape without distortion, crop instead.
Are GIF dimensions and file size the same thing?
No. Dimensions are the width and height in pixels, like 240×240; file size is how much space it takes, like 500 KB. Smaller dimensions usually mean a smaller file, but not always small enough for a platform’s limit. Use the GIF resizer for pixels, the GIF compressor for kilobytes and the GIF cropper to change what’s in the frame or its ratio.
It’s smaller but the file is still too big—now what?
Dimensions and file size aren’t the same thing. The GIF compressor gets it under 500 KB, 256 KB or any size, shrinking dimensions only if needed.
Is my GIF uploaded?
No. gifsicle is compiled to WebAssembly and runs in your browser, so the GIF never leaves your device.
Does it keep transparency? Does it work on phones?
Transparency is kept. It works in current desktop and mobile browsers, for GIFs up to 50 MB.
