FAQ

Video to GIF FAQ

Is the video to GIF converter free? Is there a watermark?

Yes—free, unlimited, no sign-up, and GIFs never carry a watermark.

What is an animated GIF?

A GIF is an image format that holds a series of frames and loops automatically. It has no sound and up to 256 colors, but almost every chat app and web page can show it.

Are there limits?

No usage limits. Videos up to 500 MB, clips up to 30 seconds. Processing happens on your device, so very long or high-resolution videos use more memory.

Will the GIF lose quality?

GIFs are limited to 256 colors, so they look slightly flatter than video. For sharper results, choose Best colors, a larger size and a higher frame rate.

Is my video uploaded?

No. The video is read and converted in your browser, and the GIF is saved to your device. Our servers never see it.

Which formats are supported?

Any video your browser can play, such as MP4, MOV and WebM, up to 500 MB. If one won’t open, an MP4 (H.264) version usually works.

Can I convert videos from my iPhone?

Yes, directly in Safari. If another browser can’t read an iPhone video, set Settings › Camera › Formats to Most Compatible, or save the clip as MP4 first.

How long can the GIF be?

Up to 30 seconds of video per GIF. At 2× speed, a 30-second clip becomes a GIF of about 15 seconds. Longer clips take longer and make larger files.

How do I make the GIF smaller?

Shorten the clip, use 8–10 fps, choose 240 or 360 pixels, pick Balanced or Smaller colors, or speed it up. Combined, these shrink files dramatically.

Do GIFs have sound?

No—the GIF format has no audio. To keep the sound, export a captioned video from the meme maker instead.

Do I need to install anything or sign up?

No. It works right in your browser on desktop and mobile.

Can I add text to the GIF?

Yes. Open “Add a caption”, type your text and pick a template, font and color. The caption appears on every frame.

How is this different from the meme maker?

This tool focuses on conversion—trimming, speed and frame rate. The meme maker focuses on captions and also works with images and GIFs. Both are free and run in your browser.
