How it works

Why some sped-up GIFs play slower

A GIF’s speed comes from how long each frame stays on screen—and browsers treat very short delays in a special way.

Browsers have a minimum delay

Chrome, Safari and other browsers play delays of 0.01 s or less as 0.1 s. Naively dividing the delays by four can make a GIF several times slower.

Merging frames keeps it honest

This tool keeps every frame at 0.02 s or more; beyond that it merges neighbouring frames, so the length shrinks by your chosen factor and plays at that speed everywhere.

Slow motion doesn’t invent frames

Slowing down only holds each frame longer; no in-between frames are made, so 0.25× looks choppy. That’s expected.

FAQ

GIF speed changer FAQ

Is this GIF speed changer free? Is there a watermark?

Yes—free and unlimited, with no sign-up and no watermark.

How do I make a GIF play faster?

Upload the GIF, pick 1.5×, 2×, 3× or 4× and make the new GIF. A 4-second GIF at 2× becomes 2 seconds.

Why do some tools make a GIF slower when speeding it up?

Browsers play frame delays of 0.01 s or less as 0.1 s. Here every frame keeps at least 0.02 s and faster speeds merge neighbouring frames, so the GIF really plays at the chosen speed in browsers and chat apps.

Will slowing a GIF make it choppy? Can it add frames?

Slowing down lengthens each frame without adding new ones, so the slower it gets the choppier it looks. 0.5× usually still flows; 0.25× is best for studying a move.

How do I reverse a GIF? What’s boomerang?

Choose Reverse under Direction and the GIF plays from the last frame to the first. Boomerang plays forward then backward, so the loop has no jump—great for stickers.

Does changing the speed affect quality or file size?

Quality is unchanged—only the timing is rewritten. File size stays about the same at most speeds, shrinks when fast speeds merge frames, and nearly doubles for boomerang.

Can I trim the GIF at the same time?

Yes. Drag the start and end sliders under Cut, and the speed, direction and trim are applied together.

Is my GIF uploaded?

No. gifsicle is compiled to WebAssembly and runs in your browser, so the GIF never leaves your device.

Does it work on phones?

Yes. Use Safari on iPhone or Chrome on Android and save straight to your photos. If an in-app browser can’t save files, open the page in your phone’s browser.
