Which tool

Cutting vs cropping vs compressing

They sound alike, but each changes a different part of the GIF.

GIF cutter (this page)LengthYou want only part of the animation
GIF cropperPicture areaYou want to cut away the edges of the picture
GIF speed changerPlayback speedIt’s too fast, too slow, or should play backwards

To cut the edges of the picture, use the GIF cropper; still over 500 KB after cutting? Use the GIF compressor.

Common uses

When to cut a GIF

Often only a second or two of a GIF really matters.

Lose the dead time

GIFs made from videos or screen recordings often start with a pause or end on black. Cut them and the GIF gets to the point.

Keep the funniest moment

For a meme, the funny part is usually a second or two; on its own it’s easier to use and loops better.

Get under size limits

A GIF’s size grows roughly with its frame count, so halving the length usually halves the file and leaves compression less to do.

FAQ

GIF cutter FAQ

Is this GIF cutter free? Is there a watermark?

Yes—free and unlimited, with no sign-up and no watermark.

How do I keep just the middle of a GIF?

Upload the GIF, drag Start to the first frame you want and End to the last, then make the new GIF. The first and last kept frames and their times show as you drag.

Is it frame-accurate?

Yes. Each step of the slider is one frame, and GIFs are stored frame by frame, so you can cut at any frame—no keyframe limits like video.

Does cutting change the speed?

No. Every kept frame keeps its original delay. To speed it up or slow it down too, set the Speed below.

Will cutting make the file smaller?

Usually, and roughly in proportion: cut half the length and the file is about half the size. For WeChat stickers, then use the compressor’s WeChat mode to reach 240×240 and under 500 KB in one go.

What’s the difference between cutting and cropping?

Cutting changes time—it removes frames at the start and end. Cropping changes the picture—it removes the edges of every frame. You can use both.

My clip is a video. How do I cut it?

Use MP4 to GIF—it trims the video and sets the speed while making the GIF.

Is my GIF uploaded?

No. gifsicle is compiled to WebAssembly and runs in your browser, so the GIF never leaves your device.

Does it work on phones?

Yes. Use Safari on iPhone or Chrome on Android, drag the sliders with a finger and save straight to your photos.
